A light moment unfolded during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret as government officials and celebrities took to the track for a friendly sprint that drew cheers and laughter from spectators.
The race brought together Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen, Principal Secretaries Fikirini Jacobs and Chris Kiptoo, digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, content creator Arap Uria, former world junior record holder Japheth Kimutai and television host Sande Bush alias Dr Ofweneke.
The participants wore T-shirts featuring red, green, black and white stripes, paired with green shorts, reflecting the colours of the Kenyan flag as they prepared for the light-hearted contest.
As the group prepared to take to the field, Assistant Director of Protocol and Events Chipukeezy set the tone with playful remarks, describing the contest as a showdown between elite athletes and what he jokingly called "fake athletes."
“Mashindano haya ni kati ya wanariadha shupavu, world champions wanashindana na wanariadha wengine ambao ni bandia,” he said.
The comedian continued teasing the participants as they lined up for the race, at one point asking whether they were ready and joking that ambulances should be put on standby.
He also singled out Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, suggesting that the other competitors should allow him to win because of his position in charge of the country's finances.
“Yeye ndio mwenye hela,” Chipukeezy joked.
As the runners crouched in preparation for the start, Kiptoo appeared eager to get going before the rest of the group.
Chipukeezy quickly seized the moment, reminding him to follow the rules despite his position in government.
“PS, tunaelewa umebeba hela lakini hapa lazima ufuate utaratibu,” he joked.
The exchange added to the light-hearted atmosphere as the competitors settled into their positions and waited for the starting signal.
Once the race began, spectators cheered the participants as they sprinted towards the finishing line, turning the contest into one of the entertainment highlights of the celebrations.
Chipukeezy continued providing commentary, poking fun at the runners as they competed.
“Bwana Itumbi anaongoza kutoka nyuma,” he remarked, drawing further laughter from the crowd.
Television host Dr Ofweneke eventually crossed the finishing line first, taking the bragging rights in the friendly contest.
The race offered a break from the formal proceedings of the national celebrations, which brought together government leaders, guests and members of the public to honour Kenyans who have contributed to the country's history and development.
Mashujaa Day is observed annually on October 20 to recognise the sacrifices and contributions of Kenyans who have helped shape the nation.
This year's celebrations were held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, a city closely associated with Kenya's athletics heritage.
The friendly sprint brought together public officials, sporting figures and entertainers in a contest that combined competition with humour, giving spectators a light moment during the national event.
