Retired Chief Justice David Maraga has warned that a divided opposition risks handing President William Ruto a second term in the 2027 General Election unless it unites behind a single presidential candidate.

Addressing the United Green Movement (UGM) National Governing Council at Merica Hotel in Nakuru, Maraga said splitting the anti-Ruto vote would weaken the opposition’s chances of defeating the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“This election is ours to lose,” said Maraga, the UGM co-party leader and presidential flagbearer.

He expressed confidence that a united opposition could defeat the government if it remained focused on the interests of ordinary Kenyans.

Maraga urged opposition leaders to rise above personal ambitions and agree on a transparent process that allows Kenyans, rather than political elites, to determine the presidential candidate.

His remarks come amid ongoing efforts by opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Patriotic Front, Fred Matiang’i of Jubilee, Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), to forge a united front.

Maraga also urged UGM officials to strengthen party structures, intensify grassroots mobilisation and build on the momentum of his recent tour of the United States, where he engaged members of the Kenyan diaspora and a US Senate committee.

He said Kenyans living abroad remained important partners in safeguarding democratic stability and promoting a peaceful and credible 2027 election.

“We must be ready to take our space. We cannot afford to let Kenyans down,” Maraga told the council, urging party leaders to prepare for a united and disciplined campaign.

The former Chief Justice said his appeal to voters was anchored in integrity, constitutionalism and public service.
