Nominated Senator Crystal Asige/HANDOUT

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, saying her record in Parliament demonstrates her commitment to protecting vulnerable groups.

Asige said she was seeking an opportunity to continue serving Kenyans, particularly young people in business and learners in special needs schools.

“I have the responsibility to protect our young people who are in business and those in special needs schools in the country. All of these I have done as a fresh leader in Parliament, even as a nominated senator, and that is my track record,” Asige said.

She cited her performance in the Senate as evidence of her ability to deliver, adding that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna could attest to her work and progress in Parliament.

Asige urged voters to consider what she could achieve if elected to represent Nairobi County, saying she would do more for residents if given the mandate.

“Tell them my work. I ask you to grant me permission to continue serving you and protecting Kenyans. If you vote for me, imagine how much more I will do for you here in Embakasi and the wider Nairobi County as a senator. Asige is coming as the Nairobi senator in 2027,” she said.

Several leaders and public figures have declared interest in the Nairobi senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a contest to succeed incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Those who have announced their bids include East African Legislative Assembly MP Winnie Odinga, Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o among others.

Winnie declared her bid on October 15, 2026, during the first anniversary commemoration of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in Bondo. Jalang’o announced his intention to contest the seat in February 2026.

Asige is a nominated senator in Kenya’s 13th Parliament, representing persons with disabilities, women and youth.

In 2024, Asige was named on the prestigious TIME100 Next list, which recognises 100 of the world’s influential emerging leaders.

She was also featured in Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40 list in 2023 and 2025 and has twice been voted Kenya’s top-performing senator.

Asige has championed six Bills, including the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025, advocating legislative reforms to address structural and societal barriers faced by persons with disabilities.

Drawing from her lived experience as a visually impaired woman, she has emerged as a prominent advocate for disability inclusion and equitable policy reform.

Beyond her legislative work, Asige is an inclusive mobility expert, accessibility auditor and award-winning musician.

She currently serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Labour and Social Welfare Committee, Secretary General of the Kenya Disabled Parliamentarians Association (KEDIPA) and chairperson for persons with disabilities within the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA).

She is also the founder of the Crystal Asige Foundation.
