Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has today inspected the ongoing redevelopment of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret as final preparations gather pace ahead of Tuesday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.
The installation of seats marks a major milestone in the upgrade of the facility, which will host President William Ruto and thousands of guests during the national celebrations on October 20.
Koskei inspected the ongoing works as contractors raced to complete key sections of the stadium ahead of the national event, which will be jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.
The upgraded stadium is expected to accommodate 15,043 spectators, providing a larger and more modern venue for national celebrations and sporting activities.
The facility is among the major infrastructure projects being prepared for the celebrations, which will place the North Rift region at the centre of the national calendar.
The stadium's redevelopment is expected to strengthen Eldoret's reputation as the City of Champions, given its longstanding association with world-class athletes, while creating more opportunities for young people to develop their talents in sports and the creative arts.
The redevelopment is also part of wider government efforts to expand the country's sporting infrastructure ahead of major international competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming World Athletics Championships.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said during an inspection on Friday that the stadium was ready to host the national celebrations, with construction expected to surpass 85 per cent completion by Sunday. He said the remaining works would continue after the event, with the government prioritising the sections required for the ceremony.
Among the outstanding works are the completion of the main pavilion roof, installation of the athletics track and final improvements to the playing surface. Full completion of the facility is expected by the end of December, according to the latest government update.
The celebrations will be held under the theme of security, sports and the finance sector, with the three host counties sharing activities to showcase their contribution to the country's development.
Beyond the national event, the stadium is expected to provide athletes with improved training and competition facilities while creating opportunities for sports-related businesses and other enterprises.
For Eldoret, a city internationally recognised for producing elite distance runners, the upgraded facility is expected to reinforce its sporting identity and provide a platform for nurturing the next generation of Kenyan talent.
The October 20 celebrations will bring together national leaders, invited guests and members of the public to honour Kenyans who have contributed to the country's progress and development.
