Mara Sugar versatile defender Joseph Okwenda/HANDOUT

Mara Sugar's versatile defender Joseph Okwenda is targeting an improved 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League campaign after his side opened the season with a 2-2 draw against 3K FC on Sunday.

Okwenda says his main objective this season is to help Mara Sugar finish higher than the 11th position they managed last season, amassing 44 points.

“My target this season is to lead Mara Sugar to a successful campaign and finish in a better position than we did last season,” said Okwenda.

The defender has established himself as a key player in the team, combining his defensive responsibilities with forward runs that provide additional attacking support.

He believes that contributing to the team's overall performance is more important than focusing on individual achievements, insisting that every player has a responsibility to help the team secure positive results.

“When I’m on the pitch, I do everything possible to help my team because, at the end of the day, the team benefits. And when the team benefits, the players benefit as well,” he added.

“Our aim this season is to finish in a higher position than we did last season. We don’t want to finish below last season’s position,” he said.

The draw against 3K FC denied Mara Sugar a winning start to the campaign, but Okwenda remains optimistic as they look to build momentum in the coming matches.

He has wants the club's supporters to remain patient as the players work towards delivering better results, assuring them that the team is committed to giving the best throughout the season.

“Our fans should be patient. We all know that no one wants to lose. The results will come, and we’ll have a great season. As players, we’ll give everything we can to achieve positive results,” Okwenda said.
