Walter Kipkoech before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo on October 6, 2026./SCREENGRABA 23-year-old man accused of killing an 18-year-old Form Four student in Molo will remain in police custody for 21 days as investigators pursue further evidence in the case.
Walter Kipkoech appeared before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo on Tuesday over the death of Joy Wangui, who was found dead at her parents’ home in Moto village, Molo, on Sunday afternoon.
Police asked the court to allow them more time to complete investigations, including conducting DNA tests on samples collected from the scene, carrying out a post-mortem examination and subjecting Kipkoech to a mental health assessment.
The prosecution also opposed his release on bail or bond, citing concerns over his safety.
“We also pray that the suspect is not released on bail or bond, as his safety is currently at risk. Members of the public were baying for his blood over the offence he is alleged to have committed,” the prosecution told the court.
Kipkoech did not oppose the application.
Magistrate Mugo consequently ordered that he remain at Molo Police Station for 21 days and return to court on October 27, 2026, for plea-taking.
Police arrested Kipkoech on Monday evening at a hideout in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, after he allegedly fled the area following the incident.
At the time of his arrest, police reportedly found him wearing Wangui’s school T-shirt, which bore her name.
Investigators are also looking into the nature of the relationship between Kipkoech and Wangui. The suspect was reportedly known to the family and is said to have been in a romantic relationship with the teenager.
Wangui’s body was discovered after her brother returned from the family shop and found the front door locked.
According to local elder Njenga Matendo, the brother entered through the back door and found his sister’s decapitated body lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen before reporting the matter to police.
“It is alleged the suspect spent the night in the same house with Wangui. Her brother woke up early and went to open their family shop, and on returning, he found the front door locked,” Matendo said.
The victim’s mother arrived later as Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers processed the scene and has since recorded a statement with investigators.
Her head was recovered from a corridor leading towards the washroom, where investigators said writings had been made on a wall using blood.
Among the messages were “Never Cheat”, “I am Sorry Joy” and “I love you”.
Police also recovered an axe, a machete and two knives at the scene, which they believe could have been used in the killing.
Matendo said the circumstances suggested the killing may have followed a dispute, although investigations are yet to establish the motive.
Before allegedly fleeing, Kipkoech reportedly went to the family shop, where he left his phone and asked for Sh1,200. He was given the money, which investigators believe he may have used to facilitate his escape.
Two bowls containing unfinished food were also found at the scene, suggesting the victim and the suspect may have been having lunch before the incident.
The killing shocked residents who described Wangui as a well-known member of the community.
Bishop Njora Mutheru said the teenager had been known to him since childhood and was a member of his church.
“I have seen the girl grow from childhood to date. She was a member of our church and had a bright future. This is a cowardly act that we strongly condemn,” he said.
The cleric also urged young people to exercise caution in romantic relationships, saying conflicts arising from relationships should not be allowed to escalate into violence.
“It is alleged they had a romantic relationship, and this should not have happened or been allowed. Children of their age have nothing to do with coupling. That is why they overreact when they can’t handle breakups maturely,” Mutheru said.
Police are expected to use the 21-day detention period to complete the outstanding investigations before presenting Kipkoech before the plea court on October 27.
