Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Garissa have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a US national who was reportedly attacked in Garissa County in May.
The suspect was arrested in Kabete, Nairobi, following an intelligence-led operation by detectives who had been searching for him for several months.
The investigation relates to the death of a US national, Osman Aweys Abdi, who was attacked on May 28, 2026, near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, about 5 km north of Iftin Police Station.
According to the DCI, the victim is said to have sustained a stab wound to his left thigh and an injury to the left side of his head after allegedly being struck with a blunt object. His mobile phone was also reportedly taken during the incident.
The DCI said Osman’s brother was alerted by a well-wisher who had obtained the victim’s contact details. He reportedly rushed to the scene and took his brother to Antalya Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was later transferred to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital pending a postmortem examination as detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The suspect is alleged to have gone into hiding after the incident, prompting detectives to launch efforts to establish his whereabouts.
The DCI said the suspect was eventually traced to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, where he was arrested.
He is currently being held at Kasarani Police Station pending his transfer to Garissa, where investigators say he is expected to face murder charges.
The suspect has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him remain subject to investigation and determination through the legal process.
The DCI said the arrest followed several months of efforts to trace the suspect and urged those sought in connection with criminal investigations not to assume that hiding would prevent their arrest.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Osman’s death is ongoing.
