A group of young protesters gathered outside Redeemed Gospel Church in Buruburu, Nairobi, on Sunday, calling for accountability over viral videos that have triggered widespread public outrage.

The protesters said they had assembled to show solidarity with a young woman identified as Jahenda, who is alleged to have been subjected to bullying by friends at an entertainment venue.

Those gathered outside the church were heard chanting Jahenda’s name as emotions ran high. Police officers were also reportedly called to the area as the gathering continued.

The demonstration came after Redeemed Gospel Church Buruburu acknowledged that one of the individuals appearing in the widely circulated videos is affiliated with the church.

In a statement, the church said it was “saddened” by the incident and stressed that membership of the church should not be used to protect anyone from accountability.

The controversy has also generated claims on social media about the identity and family background of one of the alleged perpetrators.

One claim suggested that one of the people featured in the videos was the daughter of a pastor associated with the church. Reverend Felix Kavoi, however, rejected the claim while addressing the congregation on Sunday.

Kavoi said he did not have a daughter studying at Riara University and described the social media claims as incorrect.

“I don't have any daughter at Riara University. Tell social media they are wrong and they are coming to the wrong place. My daughters are grownups, and they are working. Their names are known,” Kavoi said.

The videos circulating online appear to show four young women in an incident during a night out. In the footage, one woman appears to be cornered and pushed while another records the encounter and laughs.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including what happened before and after the recorded footage, have not been fully established from the videos alone.

The footage has sparked strong reactions from members of the public, with calls for those alleged to have been involved to be held accountable if wrongdoing is established.

The controversy has also drawn responses from Redeemed Gospel Church and Riara University, where some of those appearing in the videos are reported to study.

Both institutions have condemned the reported incident as public attention continues to focus on the case.
