Police are holding seven Chinese nationals after detectives recovered 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition during an intelligence-led operation within Ngong Race Course in Nairobi.
The seven, who are workers of a road construction company, were arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Police said a search of the suspects led to the recovery of the ammunition, which was allegedly concealed in a small grey backpack belonging to one of them. The suspect was reportedly found carrying an alien certificate and passport.
Police said the possession of the ammunition was unlawful as investigations continued to establish how it was acquired and why it was in the suspect's possession.
Separately, five men were arrested after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded outside a hotel in Murang’a town on October 2.
Police officers from Murang’a Police Station rushed to the scene and established that five men had allegedly detonated a device made from metal components, an unknown powder and wooden parts.
Police said a suspected ringleader had allegedly strapped three additional suspected explosive devices to his body. The devices were fitted with switches and connected by electrical wires to a battery.
Officers recovered six unused suspected IEDs and one device that had been detonated.
The suspects and recovered devices were taken to Murang’a Police Station as investigations continued. Specialised security agencies were also notified to assist with the investigation and handling of the suspected explosives.
The motive of the incident was not immediately established.
