Nationwide candle-lighting events to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be held today as the country prepares to mark the first anniversary of his death.
The events will be held simultaneously at 6pm in different parts of the country, with Kenyans invited to light candles in memory of the former premier and ODM founding leader.
The candle-lighting ceremonies form part of a month-long programme by ODM to commemorate Raila, who died on October 15, 2025.
In Nairobi, the main event will be held at Uhuru Park Grounds, where activities are scheduled to begin at 3pm ahead of the candle-lighting ceremony at 6pm.
Other events will take place in different counties, including Mombasa and Kisumu.
In Mombasa, the ceremony will be held at Treasury Square in the Central Business District, while Kisumu will host its event at Kisumu Central Square.
An additional candle-lighting session is also expected at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East, according to a poster shared by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The nationwide ceremonies will precede the first anniversary of Raila's death on October 15, when further activities are expected to be held to remember the veteran opposition leader.
The candle-lighting events are expected to bring together Raila's supporters and members of the public in a simultaneous remembrance across the country.
Judgement on Supreme Court judges’ bid to stop Havi’s JSC removal push
Meanwhile, in the corridors of justice, a bench is expected to deliver judgment today in a case challenging the process through which petitions seeking the removal of Supreme Court judges were initiated.
The petition was filed by the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) against the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), challenging the simultaneous consideration of petitions seeking the removal of more than two Supreme Court judges.
FIDA wants the court to declare the consideration of such petitions unconstitutional.
The case comes against the backdrop of separate proceedings in which Supreme Court judges moved to the High Court seeking to stop former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi from initiating a process before the JSC seeking their removal from office.
The judges challenged Havi’s efforts to have the JSC consider petitions seeking their removal, with the matter raising questions over the procedure for initiating and considering such petitions.
The bench is expected to its final determination on the legality of the removal process.
