Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned politicians against preaching hatred and ethnic divisions in Mt Kenya.
Kindiki said the region must remain united despite political differences as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Limuru, Kindiki, without referring to any individual politician, said the unity of the country and peaceful coexistence among communities should remain a priority as politicians begin positioning themselves ahead of the next elections.
“We don’t entertain politicians preaching hatred. We need peace across Mt Kenya irrespective of political affiliation,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President said politicians should be allowed to sell their policies, development agendas and political programmes to the electorate without resorting to incitement or creating divisions among communities.
He said political competition should not be allowed to undermine the unity of the region or the country, urging leaders to focus on issues that directly affect the lives of citizens.
“We will not allow our people to be divided. We must work as one irrespective of political affiliation,” he said.
Kindiki said Kenyans would ultimately have the opportunity to make their own decision at the ballot, urging politicians to respect the electorate and allow voters to choose the leaders they want.
He said differences in political affiliation should not become a source of hostility, arguing that leaders from different political formations can continue working together for the development of the country.
The Deputy President also addressed criticism and personal attacks that have been directed at him by some political leaders, saying he had chosen not to respond through retaliation.
“I have forgiven those who have been abusing me. I will not revenge but I will forgive them because I can’t allow politics to divide us,” Kindiki said.
His remarks come as political activity intensifies in the Mt Kenya region, with various leaders and political formations seeking to strengthen their support ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kindiki said the region should instead take advantage of its political and economic potential by remaining focused on development and improving the welfare of residents.
Limuru MP Chege Kiragu praised Kindiki for what he described as his role in supporting the Kenya Kwanza administration and advancing government programmes in the region.
Kiragu said the government had made progress in improving infrastructure and implementing development projects, arguing that the region was benefiting from increased government investment.
“We are fully behind this government and we will ensure that Ruto and Kindiki are re-elected,” Kiragu said.
The Limuru MP said residents should continue supporting development programmes while allowing political leaders to present their agendas to the electorate.
Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a also voiced her support for the Kenya Kwanza administration, backing the government’s development agenda and calling for continued focus on projects aimed at improving the lives of residents.
Kindiki's message placed emphasis on maintaining political tolerance in Mt Kenya, with the Deputy President urging leaders to compete on policies and development rather than ethnic mobilisation and personal attacks.
