Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has flagged off nine milk coolers in Kiambu County, saying the equipment will help farmers reduce milk losses caused by spoilage.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Limuru, Kindiki said the deployment was part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s efforts to fulfil its 2022 campaign manifesto and improve the welfare of farmers.
He said the government had already distributed 297 milk coolers across the country, with the nine launched in Kiambu set to serve farmers in areas including Limuru, Kikuyu, Kiamba and Githunguri among other places.
“Farmers said they want coolers and we are committed to distribute,” Kindiki said, noting that increased milk production has created a need for better storage and cooling infrastructure.
The Deputy President said the government would continue investing in the dairy sector, noting that Kenya has developed a significant milk-processing capacity and is the largest distributor of processed milk in Africa.
Kindiki said the coolers would enable farmers to preserve milk for longer, reduce post-production losses and improve their returns from dairy farming.
He said that the government has also subsidised the cost of Artificial insemination across the Country .
He further added that the government has already lowed the price of fertiliser.
