Deputy President Kithure Kindiki speaks to residents in Nyeri on October 1, 2026/DPCS

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has showcased the government's investment in Nyeri's public infrastructure, with more than Sh1.2 billion going into a modern stadium and markets aimed at transforming sports and trade in the county.

Kindiki inspected the Sh900 million upgrade of Rùrìng'ù Stadium, which is now 70 per cent complete and is being developed to international standards.

The Deputy President said the project is part of a wider national programme involving 32 other stadiums across the country.

“This is the most ambitious sports infrastructure upgrade since Kenya came to be,” Kindiki said after inspecting the works.

The Rùrìng'ù project is expected to complement major sporting facilities in Nairobi, including Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, as well as the Talanta Sports City.

But beyond sports, Kindiki's tour also focused on infrastructure targeting traders, with several markets under construction or already completed in Nyeri County.

He inspected the Asian Quarters ESP Market, one of 13 such facilities at different stages of development in the county.

The nearby Nyeri Modern Market is being constructed at a cost of Sh324 million and will accommodate 750 traders, while the completed Field Marshall Muthoni ESP Market is ready for handover and is expected to host 300 traders.

Kindiki's inspection brought together projects targeting both sporting activities and the local economy, as the government continues to roll out public infrastructure across the county.

The Deputy President was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, Gender and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary Ann Wang'ombe, MCAs and other leaders.
