Kayole Starlets players ahead of their half time break on Sunday/ CHARLENE MALWAKayole Starlets head coach George Kimani has challenged his players to improve their decision-making while in possession as the Women's Premier League gathers momentum.
Despite beating Trinity Starlets 1-0 on Sunday, Kimani registered dissatisfaction with the manner his players approached the encounter.
Kayole have four points from two matches and face promoted Mathare United Women on October 3.
Kimani said his immediate task is to help his young side turn defensive solidity into more controlled possession and sharper attacking play.
Magneta Ocharo’s 30th-minute strike at Police Sacco Stadium secured Kayole’s first win of the new campaign.
They opened the season with a 2-2 draw against Shabana Starlets.
Kimani, however, believes the result masked areas that require attention, especially build-up from the back.
“Our team is a work in progress. We are grateful that we managed to secure a clean sheet but we are not really impressed. We are inviting the opponent too much and keep bringing problems to our side,” Kimani said.
“We are playing while making rushed decisions. When building and progressing, we will do more. We are human, but that does not mean we should keep repeating our mistakes.”
He is looking for better balance as the campaign progresses.
“We defend better than we attack,” he said. “My players like to ensure we walk with them until winning.”
The coach is also managing a relatively youthful squad, with speed, work rate and the physical demands of top-flight football among areas he is monitoring.
“We have players who are young and we want to manage their speed and work rate. We are expecting more in the next match,” Kimani said.
Kayole returned to the top flight last season and finished sixth.
The club changed coaches ahead of the new season, with Kimani replacing Mary Adhiambo’s departure.
Adhiambo guided Kayole to promotion after winning the 2024/25 Women’s National Super League Zone A title.
Meanwhile, Mathare started their campaign with a 3-1 victory over four-time champions Vihiga Queens before losing 1-0 to Kibera Soccer Women on Sunday.
