Kiambu gubernatorial aspirant John Mwaura has linked unemployment among young people to the growing problem of alcohol and drug abuse in the county.

Mwaura said this as he steps up his political engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mwaura raised the issue during a Meet the People tour in Gatundu North this week, where DCP leaders criticised the government over the spread of illicit alcohol.

He said the lack of employment opportunities had left many young people vulnerable to social problems, including excessive alcohol and drug consumption.

“Gatundu North Meet the People Tour, we have heard you. The conversation continues, and the journey to a better Kiambu moves forward,” Mwaura said.

The remarks came as DCP leaders accused President William Ruto’s administration of failing to adequately address the production, sale and consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks in Central Kenya.

Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa and Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia joined Mwaura in criticising the government over the issue, alleging that illicit alcohol had contributed to deaths, family breakdowns and declining productivity among young people.

The concerns came shortly after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki held a meeting on measures to combat alcohol and drug abuse, putting the issue at the centre of renewed government attention.

Mwaura said addressing the challenges facing young people would require more than enforcement against illicit alcohol, arguing that economic opportunities were also necessary.
