Nairobi Rivers Commission commissioner John Kieli Kalua has died after suffering a sudden asthma attack while attending to personal business in Nairobi's Central Business District.

According to a statement from his family, Kalua suffered the attack while going about his usual business in the city.

Efforts by people near him to assist, including attempts to get him an inhaler, did not bear fruit. He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel who arrived at the scene.

The family said Kalua was asthmatic but had managed the condition.

He said Kalua called for help, and people nearby attempted to assist him, but he died before further help could be provided.

“He was asthmatic. And it was a situation that was very well managed all through. And as he was going on his business, he had an attack. The family humbly requests the country to pray with us,” his brother Isaac Kalua Green said.

Kalua was a commissioner at the Nairobi Rivers Commission and served as the executive director of the Green Africa Foundation.

He was also the chairperson of the Kenya Climate Change Working Group.

His death comes as he continued to serve in environmental and climate-related initiatives through his various roles.
