Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina./HANDOUT
Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has called on residents to make citizen’s arrests of imposters distributing items in the names of political leaders without authorisation from their offices.
Maina said residents should arrest and hand over to police anyone found distributing items purporting to come from her office or that of Senator James Kamau Murango.
She said the items being distributed could be embarrassing and urged residents not to allow individuals to use the names of leaders to embarrass them or create divisions between them and the public.
Speaking at ACK Church Kutus in Kirinyaga County, Maina said residents should first establish whether those distributing such items were genuinely acting on behalf of her office or Murango’s office.
“If someone distributes items that are embarrassing and you are not aware of his identity or whether he comes from my office, or that of Senator Kamau Murango, please take action against them by arresting that person and presenting him at the nearby police station and alert me so that we can take legal action,” Maina said.
She said those behind such activities were imposters seeking to damage the reputations of the two leaders.
“Those who were behind the incident are not us. They are malicious people capable of distributing poison just to soil my name and that of Senator Murango so that they can create hatred between us and the people,” she said.
Maina was speaking against the backdrop of a viral video showing women’s underwear bearing the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) branding.
She said she would not distribute personal items such as underwear bearing her name and warned residents against associating such activities with her office.
“I am urging the residents of Kirinyaga to take note that there is no day that I will distribute food or underwear written in my name,” she said.
Maina said the distribution of private clothing items in the name of political leaders was embarrassing to the county.
“It is wrong for someone to embarrass Kirinyaga County by demonstrating that the people of Kirinyaga are that backward to distribute clothing items that are private,” she said.
She vowed to pursue those responsible for using her name and that of Murango without authorisation.
“I will take on head-on those behind such embarrassing character because I fear no one,” Maina said.
Murango on Friday denied involvement in the production or distribution of the underwear shown in the viral video.
Through his lawyers, Sakimpa & Partners Advocates, the senator said he neither printed, procured, bought, supplied, nor distributed the items.
“Our client did not print, procure, buy, supply or distribute the underwear shown in the video,” the lawyers said in correspondence dated September 24, 2026.
The lawyers also said Murango had not authorised the use of his name or NGAAF branding on the items, arguing that the appearance of his name and the branding did not establish his involvement.
