Detectives have arrested a third suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, widening an investigation into the killing that has continued for a year.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the latest suspect is a boda boda rider suspected of conducting surveillance on Mbobu before he was fatally shot along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025.

The arrest follows those of a police officer suspected of being the gunman and another boda boda rider suspected of ferrying the officer to and from the scene.

With three suspects now in custody, detectives said they were intensifying efforts to establish whether other people may have played a role in the killing.

"The latest arrest followed sustained investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mbobu’s death," DCI said.

The agency said the rider is suspected of having conducted surveillance on the lawyer before the shooting.

The development comes days after detectives arrested a police officer suspected of being the person who shot Mbobu.

The officer was arrested after detectives obtained a firearm that had been issued to him on the day of the killing and submitted it for ballistic examination.

According to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, the examination linked the firearm to the shooting.

“As part of the ongoing investigations, detectives today recovered the Ceska pistol that had been issued to the suspect at the time of the incident. Ballistic examination has since confirmed that the firearm was indeed used in the shooting that claimed the life of Lawyer Mbobu. The finding provides a significant forensic breakthrough in the investigation and further strengthens the evidentiary trail being assembled by detectives,” Amin said.

The DCI said investigations had also established that a police officer who remains at large allegedly coordinated the operation in liaison with a person already in police custody in connection with the killing of psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso.

Mutiso was fatally shot on July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi, while inside a motor vehicle.

The DCI said information obtained during investigations into Mutiso’s killing provided leads in the Mbobu case.

Mbobu was shot and killed at about 5.30 pm on September 9, 2025, as he drove towards his residence in Bogani, Karen, according to officials.

He was a former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal and had represented Mutiso’s husband, Prof David Ndetei, in legal proceedings.

The DCI said its specialised homicide teams and forensic experts continued to work on reconstructing the events surrounding the killing.

The agency said it remained focused on tracing other people suspected of having been involved, including those who may have allegedly planned or facilitated the operation.
