Residents in Kirinyaga have questioned the distribution of free underwear to women in the county.
Some residents criticised the initiative, saying women needed programmes that would have a lasting impact on their lives rather than items such as underwear.
One resident said she was disappointed by the distribution, adding that she had previously held those behind the initiative in high regard.
“I wish it could be something else, like shoes at least. No, those are small embarrassments. It is disappointing; I couldn’t even imagine,” the resident said.
Another resident said the distribution had caused frustration in the area and urged those behind the initiative to focus on programmes that would improve the lives of women.
“This thing of underwear has brought so much disappointment and problems here,” the resident said.
“If you want to help women, do something that when you come back next time, it would have uplifted them.”
A third resident questioned the decision to distribute the items, saying women needed more meaningful forms of support.
The resident urged those supporting women in the area to focus on initiatives that would have a lasting impact on their lives.
