Mathare United Women/HANDOUTMathare opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over four-time champions Vihiga Queens, but Aluoch believes the scoreline did not reflect the number of opportunities her side created.
“We got numerous scoring chances but only utilised three. It could be that there was a bit of anxiety because we were meeting four-time champions, so the players were not so sure about the outcome of the fixture. But we will work on that,” Aluoch said.
The coach wants the team to be more clinical in their next outing as Mathare look to build on the three points collected on their return to the top flight after a four-year absence.
Mathare had to come from behind against Vihiga Queens after Josephine Werenga put the former champions ahead, before Sylvia Otieno and Mitchell Waithera turned the match around. The victory provided an early test of Mathare's readiness for top-flight football after the club spent four seasons away from the WPL.
Aluoch attributed the result to the work done during pre-season, saying the technical bench had prepared the players for the league demands.
“It was our first match in the Women’s Premier League in four years, and we collected all three points. It tells you a lot about our technical bench. We did a lot in our pre-season,” she said.
Mathare's immediate focus is now to maintain momentum while correcting the missed chances that could prove costly against more clinical opponents.
Aluoch also praised Vihiga Queens for pushing her side throughout the contest, but believes the experience will help Mathare settle into life back in the top flight.
Aluoch said the priority is to convert most of the opportunities they create if they are to turn their strong return into a consistent WPL campaign.
The promoted side will next face Kibera Soccer Women on September 27 as they seek to build on their opening-day victory.
