The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has warned of adverse weather and sea conditions along the Kenyan coast from September to December 2026, urging vessels, fisherfolk and coastal communities to take precautions.

The authority said the conditions could reduce visibility, posing risks to vessels and people undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline.

"The conditions may include strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility, which pose a risk to vessels and persons undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline," KMA stated.

In a public notice, KMA advised the public to avoid venturing into the sea during periods of adverse weather and rough sea conditions.

Boat owners and operators have been urged to properly secure their vessels while underway, moored or at anchor, while passengers and crew have been advised to wear life jackets while on board.

Fisherfolk and other maritime stakeholders have also been advised to exercise caution and postpone non-essential activities at sea when conditions deteriorate.

KMA said vessels already at sea should monitor weather updates and proceed to safe shelter where necessary.

Coastal communities have further been urged to remain alert to strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall and follow instructions issued by relevant authorities.

The authority urged the public to continuously monitor official weather and maritime safety information issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and KMA.

"The public is urged to continuously monitor official weather and maritime safety information from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) and the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) and to report maritime incidences and emergencies to the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC) using 0737719414 or 0721368313," KMA said.

The advisory comes as government agencies step up preparations for the October-November-December rainfall season, with authorities warning of possible heavy rainfall, flooding and other weather-related disruptions.

KMA urged maritime users and coastal communities to take precautionary measures and act on official weather and safety advisories as conditions evolve.
