Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on opposition leaders to step up efforts to build a united coalition to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Orengo said the time had come for opposition parties to move beyond consultations and begin the process of forging a political alliance capable of presenting a united front against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking at a press conference attended by several opposition leaders, Orengo said the process would not be easy but maintained that discussions were already underway.

“The time is now and we must get into the business of building this coalition. It is not always easy but we are at it and at the end of the day, this new slogan, ‘One Term, One Team, One Coalition’, will be a reality,” Orengo said.

He said the ultimate objective was to respond to what he described as Kenyans' desire for political change, adding that opposition parties needed to put aside their differences and work towards a common platform.

“At the end of it all we will get what Kenyans deserve, send Ruto home and get our country back,” he said.

The meeting brought together Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, among other opposition leaders.

Orengo said the opposition needed to operate as a coordinated political force with a clearly defined objective ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The Opposition must be like a guided missile where the target is set, the destination is set and the speed is also set. All that remains is to hit the target,” he said.

“The target is one-the change that Kenyans desire so much.”

The governor said consultations among opposition leaders had been ongoing and expressed optimism that the various parties would eventually agree on a common political strategy.

“I hope we will have one united Opposition,” Orengo said, adding that he was encouraged by the leaders' efforts to work together.

“There have been ongoing consultations within the Opposition and they are continuing. I am delighted that we are coming together.”

The push for an opposition coalition comes as political parties and leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest, with several leaders signalling the need for a joint platform to confront President Ruto.

Orengo said the opposition should remain focused on delivering political change, arguing that Kenyans should not have to wait beyond the next election if constitutional avenues for change became available.

“Change Kenyans have been wanting takes place at the next election, or even sooner if you have the constitutional means to do so,” he said.
