Illicit brew in Kahawa West/NACADA

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has destroyed more than 29,000 litres of illicit brew following a crackdown in Kahawa West, Soweto slums, Kiambu County.

The intelligence-led operation saw enforcement officers destroy 29,240 litres of kangara and 140 litres of changaa at a brewing den within the informal settlement.

According to NACADA, officers also destroyed materials and equipment used in preparing the brews, with the substances disposed of at the scene in accordance with standard enforcement procedures.

One man was arrested during the operation and escorted to Kasarani Police Station, where he is being held awaiting arraignment in court.

Speaking after the crackdown, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa praised the enforcement team for its swift response, reaffirming the authority's commitment to tackling illicit alcohol production.

"This operation is a clear demonstration that NACADA will not relent in the fight against illicit alcohol and harmful substances," Omerikwa said.

"The destruction of over 29,000 litres of kangara and changaa is a significant blow to the illegal trade that continues to destroy lives, families, and communities."

He also acknowledged the role of information from members of the public in supporting the operation and urged communities to continue cooperating with enforcement agencies.

"We thank the public for the information that made this operation possible and encourage continued cooperation," he said.

The crackdown comes amid growing national concern over the proliferation of illicit brews and their impact on public health and safety.

According to the authority, consumption of illicit alcohol has been linked to serious health emergencies, including deaths, blindness and organ failure, particularly in informal settlements.

NACADA said community intelligence remains critical in identifying and dismantling networks involved in the production and distribution of harmful substances.

The enforcement activities form part of a broader national strategy to reduce the supply of and demand for harmful substances under the NACADA Act of 2012.

The authority said the recent validation of the Community-Based Rehabilitation Guidelines complements these efforts by providing a framework for community-led prevention, treatment and recovery services.

NACADA has urged Kenyans to report suspected illicit brewing, distribution and sale through its official channels, assuring the public that information shared will be treated confidentially.

The arrested man is expected to face charges related to the manufacture and possession of illicit alcohol under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act of 2010.
