Suspects arrested

A visit to see her detained boyfriend at Buruburu Police Station led to the arrest of a 26-year-old woman after police allegedly found rolls of bhang concealed inside a loaf of bread.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the woman had gone to the station to see her boyfriend and asked officers at the report office to deliver the loaf to him.

The DCI said officers became suspicious after noticing that the bread package had been opened, prompting them to search it before it was handed over.

Five rolls of bhang and a matchbox were allegedly found concealed inside the loaf, according to the DCI.

The agency said a further search of the woman's jacket allegedly uncovered seven more rolls, bringing the total number of rolls recovered to 12.

The woman was subsequently taken into custody, while the items recovered were secured as exhibits, the DCI said. She is expected to be presented in court following the completion of police processing.

In a separate incident in Thika, police arrested a man suspected of being involved in the distribution of bhang after a motorcycle chase in Kairi, Thika West.

The DCI said the suspect was riding a motorcycle with a female passenger when they encountered a police roadblock.

According to the agency, the rider attempted to evade the officers, leading to a chase that ended near Ree Supermarket after he lost control of the motorcycle while negotiating a speed bump.

The motorcycle crashed, and the female passenger reportedly fled into the crowd as officers moved in.

The rider was arrested at the scene, while a search of the motorcycle allegedly led to the recovery of 300 rolls of bhang and an additional three kilogrammes of the drug, which the DCI said had been wrapped in yellow polythene and secured to the motorcycle seat.

The suspect was taken to Kimuchu Police Station, where he remained in custody pending further police processing and arraignment.

The two incidents were among cases reported by the DCI in its ongoing operations targeting suspected narcotics-related offences.
