Over 6,000 Kiambu farmers receive certified maize seeds and fertiliser in Kiambu county on September 16, 2026/ HANDOUTOver 6,000 farmers in Kiambu County have received certified maize seeds and fertiliser as the county government steps up support to boost food production ahead of the expected heavy rains.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi led the distribution in Ngoliba Ward, Thika Constituency, where farmers were each given hybrid maize seeds and a small sack of fertiliser.
Wamatangi said the support was intended to help households produce their own food and improve food security.
“Even if we build hospitals, ECD schools and markets, we have to remember families and how we live at home. That is why we are here to bring you maize and fertiliser,” Wamatangi said.
The governor said the county government would continue supporting farmers, adding that more inputs would be distributed in January and again later in the year.
He also asked farmers to embrace food production as a way of strengthening household food security.
During the exercise, the farm inputs were transported to the venue by lorry and offloaded, after which farmers were asked to line up and collect their allocations before leaving.
One beneficiary said the assistance would help provide food for households beyond the immediate season.
“Governor Wamatangi has brought us food that will help us today and in the future. Others have been bringing us things that we consume today, and they end there. This has helped us as a family because when we farm today, the future is safeguarded,” the farmer said.
The beneficiary added that increased food production would also benefit children by ensuring families have food as they support them through school.
Another beneficiary said the current support differed from previous forms of assistance because farmers were being given inputs to produce for themselves.
“In the past we used to receive assistance, but this time it is empowering because we farm and get more produce. We are also happy because the seeds and fertiliser we have received are certified and suitable,” the beneficiary said.
The distribution comes as farmers prepare for the expected rains, with the certified seed and fertiliser intended to support maize production during the planting season.
Wamatangi told the gathering that improving food security should remain part of the county's development priorities, alongside investments in health, education and markets.
He also asked farmers to continue working together and make productive use of the inputs provided.
