People rescued from drowning should be placed in the recovery position and an ambulance called, rather than pressing their stomachs to remove swallowed water. Benjamin Mwangi, an occupational safety and health officer at Kenya Red Cross Training Institute, says survivors should be taken to hospital and monitored for 24 hours to prevent complications from secondary drowning. He adds that trained divers are also crucial in rescue operations.
