A roads engineer was found dead in the bathroom of a hotel room in Malindi, Kilifi County, while a suspected drowning and a deadly mine collapse were reported in separate incidents along the Coast and in Migori County.
Bernard Gladstone Wangusi was discovered lifeless in the bathroom of the hotel room he had booked.
Wangusi had checked into the hotel at about 6:15pm on Thursday, September 3, together with his colleagues from Lamu.
His driver went to wake him at about 9:50am on Friday to take him to Malindi Airport but found him unresponsive in the bathroom.
Police officers visited the scene alongside Crime Scene Investigation officers from Malindi, who documented the scene.
Investigators said Wangusi had no visible physical injuries.
His body was removed to Malindi Star Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
In another incident, a 43-year-old man was found dead in ocean waters in the Manyani area of Mombasa County, in what police suspect could have been a case of drowning.
The body of Hamisi Juma was retrieved from the ocean by members of the public after residents spotted it floating in the water.
Police officers who rushed to the scene found that the body had already been pulled from the ocean.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Juma had been seen the previous night at a local mnazi den, where he appeared to be heavily intoxicated and disturbed.
His body was discovered floating in the nearby ocean waters the following morning.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, although initial information points to possible drowning.
The body was moved to the Coast General Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, one miner died and four others sustained injuries after a section of a mine collapsed on them in the Karosi area of Kuria West, Migori County.
The incident occurred while the workers were operating inside the mine, which is approximately 100 metres deep.
Police said the mine is located on a parcel of land operated by a businessman who reported the incident to officers at Kehancha Police Station.
Witnesses said part of the mine wall suddenly collapsed, burying four workers under debris.
Other workers managed to rescue their colleagues and rushed them to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Those injured were reported to be in stable condition. They were initially treated at Kurutyange Hospital before being referred to Migori County Referral Hospital for further medical attention.
However, a 60-year-old miner identified as Chacha, alias Kimeme Kuria, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collapse.
His body was removed to the Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.
Police said they recorded the incident as a death-in-the-mine report as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse continue.
The incidents come amid concerns over safety in mining areas, where officials have been urging miners to prioritise their safety before venturing into shafts.
Police statistics show that up to three deaths occur weekly at the sites.
