A 47-year-old man is in police custody after allegedly defiling and assaulting his nine-year-old daughter, who later died from injuries sustained in the incident in Kibra, Nairobi.

The incident occurred on September 6 after officers at Kibra police station received a distress call reporting that the suspect had seriously assaulted his daughter.

Police officers, accompanied by members of the community policing team, responded to the report and rushed to the scene.

However, upon arrival, they were informed that the suspect had already taken the critically injured girl to Mbagathi Hospital in an apparent attempt to seek medical attention.

The officers proceeded to the hospital, where they received the news that the child had been pronounced dead on arrival.

A preliminary examination conducted after the girl’s death revealed multiple bruises and swellings across her body, as well as a freshly lost upper incisor tooth, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Further examination indicated that the child had also been sexually assaulted.

The girl’s body was subsequently moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.

The suspect was arrested and remains in police custody as detectives complete investigations before presenting him in court.

The DCI said the case was being treated with the seriousness it deserved, while extending condolences to the bereaved family.

“The DCI extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and stands with them in this moment of profound grief,” the agency said.

The DCI also warned members of the public against violence and abuse, particularly involving children.

“Such acts are a grave violation of the law and a betrayal of the trust and protection every child deserves,” the agency said.

The investigations are expected to establish what happened before the girl’s death and gather evidence to support the prosecution of the suspect.

The DCI said it would continue pursuing perpetrators of such crimes, adding that “stern lawful action will be taken against anyone found culpable.”
