Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has urged residents along the Kerio Valley escarpment to stop cultivating seasonal food crops on the slopes and instead adopt sustainable perennial crops like coffee, mangoes, and avocados. Speaking in Embobut, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Murkomen said cultivating seasonal crops, such as maize, along steep escarpments loosens topsoil and destabilizes the terrain. This significantly increases the risk of catastrophic mudslides and landslides during heavy downpours
