Solomon Atsiaya takes over as Co-operative University of Kenya alumni chairman

Kenya National Police DT SACCO chief executive officer Solomon Angutsa Atsiaya has been sworn in as chairman of The Co-operative University of Kenya Alumni Association (CUKAA).

Atsiaya took the oath alongside members of the association’s new executive committee during a ceremony presided over by the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Isaac K. Nyamongo.

The new executive includes Mary Njoki Mbugua, an assistant lecturer at the university, as vice chairperson, and Peter Wawire Ongeti, business development manager at CIC Insurance Group, as secretary.

The leadership change comes as the university seeks to increase alumni participation in student mentorship, internships, research and financial support programmes.

Speaking during the ceremony, Prof Nyamongo said alumni remained an important link between the university and the professional world, and called for stronger engagement between graduates and current students.

Atsiaya said his immediate focus would be on mobilising graduates to support students through mentorship, professional networking and financial assistance.

“We have alumni who have built successful careers in different fields. Our responsibility now is to bring that experience, knowledge and network together and make it useful to the students coming behind us,” Atsiaya said.

The association plans to develop a structured mentorship programme that will connect students with professionals in various industries. The programme is expected to provide career guidance and expose students to workplace experiences.

CUKAA also plans to establish a sponsorship programme targeting needy and deserving students, while pursuing opportunities for internships and professional networking.

The association intends to bring together graduates of the university and its predecessor institutions as it seeks to increase alumni participation in university activities.

Atsiaya takes over the alumni association leadership while continuing to head Kenya National Police DT SACCO, one of the country's large deposit-taking co-operative societies.

The new executive will serve as the link between the university's alumni and current students, with its programmes expected to focus on career mentorship, student support and alumni engagement.
