The internship will run for 12 months and will not be renewed The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation has opened applications for an internship programme targeting young graduates aged between 25 and 35 years.
The programme is being offered under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP), funded by the International Development Association of the World Bank.
The ministry said the programme is intended to bridge the gap between academic training and practical workplace experience and prepare graduates for careers in their respective fields.
“The internship programme is targeting young graduates with a bachelor degree certificates and having obtained the said qualification not more than two years before the date of this advertisement,” the ministry said.
The programme is coordinated by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and managed by the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW).
The ministry said enrolment, remuneration and quarterly monitoring and evaluation of interns will be undertaken in accordance with the requirements of Part II of the Public Service Internship Act, 2023.
The second cohort will comprise 65 interns, who are scheduled to begin the 12-month internship in January 2027, during the third quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year.
Applicants must be aged between 25 and 35 years and must hold a relevant bachelor's degree from a recognised institution of higher education.
Applicants must also not have benefited from another internship programme funded by the government.
In addition, candidates must not have had formal employment in their areas of specialisation after graduation.
The ministry is seeking graduates from a wide range of disciplines related to water, environment, technology, social sciences and other relevant fields.
The eligible areas include geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, natural resources management, civil engineering with a water option, sociology, gender development studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), ICT and communication, data science, chemistry, hydrometeorology or climate analysis, hydrology, economics, finance and other water-related engineering courses.
Where successful applicants will work
Successful applicants will be deployed to different agencies and counties implementing the HoAGW4RP.
The ministry said these institutions will serve as the interns' workstations, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge and gain practical experience.
Interns will also occasionally undertake field assignments during implementation of project activities in the five counties targeted by the HoAGW4RP.
The internship is being offered under Component 2A of the project, which focuses on generating groundwater information and strengthening regional and national groundwater institutions.
According to the ministry, the internship programme is one of the capacity-building initiatives under the component.
Duties of interns
Interns will be expected to complete tasks assigned by their supervisors or mentors and document the skills they acquire during the programme.
They will also participate in mentorship activities and additional programme responsibilities and comply with quarterly monitoring and evaluation requirements.
The ministry said interns must be prepared to be deployed to any relevant office or workstation within institutions implementing the HoAGW4RP where an internship vacancy exists.
They will be required to abide by the rules and regulations of the public institution to which they are posted and make an effort to acquire relevant skills in their areas of specialisation.
Interns will also be expected to observe confidentiality and safeguard tools and equipment placed in their possession during the programme.
They must obtain clearance from the relevant authority before leaving their internship station.
Stipend and duration
The internship will run for 12 months and will not be renewed.
Interns will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with the prevailing guidelines, the Internship Policy and Guidelines for the Public Service, as well as other applicable government circulars or directives issued from time to time.
The ministry did not state the specific monthly amount in the advertisement.
Interns who successfully complete the programme will be issued with certificates.
However, gross or disorderly conduct, unsatisfactory performance or commission of a criminal offence are sufficient grounds upon which the internship may be discontinued.
An intern wishing to terminate the programme may do so by giving one month's notice or submitting a written resignation or termination letter to the head of the public institution through the supervisor they will be assigned.
The ministry also allows an intern to give two weeks' notice before the expiry of the agreed internship period.

Applicants must submit the official internship programme application form, cover letter, copy of their ID card, CV, relevant certificates and other supporting documents by email to [email protected].
The subject line of the email must read: “APPLICATION FOR THE HoAGW4RP INTERNSHIP 2027”.
The application deadline is September 18, 2026.
Successful candidates will subsequently be required to provide proof of a valid Personal Accident Insurance Cover for the internship period, a Certificate of Good Conduct, a copy of their KRA PIN certificate and bank account details.
The ministry said selection will be based on the merit and performance of candidates during the interview.
It also said the programme will provide equal opportunities to eligible graduates, while encouraging women and persons living with disability to apply.
