Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah is mourning the death of his sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya, who passed away on August 21, 2026, after a long illness.
Omtatah described his sister as a woman of strength, kindness and wisdom, saying she remained devoted to her family throughout her life.
“It is with profound sorrow that I mourn the passing of my beloved sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya, who departed this life on 21st August 2026 after a long illness bravely borne,” Omtatah said.
“She was a woman of strength, kindness, wisdom and unwavering devotion to her family.”
The Senator extended his condolences to the Musita and Okoiti families following the death of Mary, who was born in 1958.
“May God grant the Musita and Okoiti families strength and comfort during this difficult time,” Omtatah said.
Paying tribute to his late sister, the Busia Senator invoked a Biblical passage to describe her life and resilience during her illness.
“Mary, you fought a good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Rest in eternal peace,” he said.
Mary died at Mater Hospital in Nairobi after a long illness that the family said she bravely endured.
A family announcement described her passing as an occasion of “profound sorrow and humble acceptance of God's will.”
Mary was the beloved wife of Mwalimu Fanuel Musita of Bungoma County and a mother of five children-Dr David Musita, who lives in Sweden, Dr Patrick Musita of Kitale County Hospital, Inviolata Musita of Kocholya, Consolata Musita of Nairobi and Albert Musita of Nairobi.
She was also a mother-in-law to Dr Anne Gisira, Georgian, Faith Otunga, Wickliffe Atuulo and Lilian Mmbone.
The late teacher was a grandmother to Stephanie, Stacy, Sasha, Taylen, Wallace, Myles, Kyle, Noelle, Dennis, Joseph, Jamari, Cyril and Sydney.
Mary was the daughter of the late Mwalimu Patrick Okoiti and Mama Wilhemina Okoiti. She was also the daughter-in-law of the late Mzee Joshua Musita and the late Tabitha Mwanza.
She was a sister to Regina Kalasinga, Petronilla Okoiti, Valerie Okoiti, Okiya Omtatah, Catherine Okoiti, Kizito Okoiti, Bernard Okoiti, Isidore Okoiti, Theresea Okoiti, Lucy Okoiti and Magdalene Amanya.
The family said she was also a sister-in-law to many and maintained friendships with numerous people during her lifetime.
“She will be remembered for her love, strength, kindness, wisdom and unwavering devotion to her family,” the family said.
The family added that Mary “touched many lives” and would be deeply missed by her relatives, friends and all those who knew and loved her.
Her death comes as a personal loss for Omtatah, who has represented Busia County in the Senate and has been a prominent voice on constitutional and governance matters.
The family has announced that the cortege will leave Delights Funeral Home in Bungoma, where her body is lying, ahead of her burial.
Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Kabula in Bungoma County.
Her family has asked relatives, friends and those who knew her to join them in honouring her life and legacy as they bid farewell to a woman remembered for her strength, kindness and commitment to her family
