Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appears to be making the most of his 10-day sabbatical in the United States, taking time away from his increasingly active political engagements to reconnect with his family.
A video shared online shows Gachagua enjoying a boat ride with his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, with the two seated next to each other as they took in the scenery.
The relaxed moment comes days after Gachagua jetted out of Kenya for an extended tour of the US, where he is expected to combine personal downtime with a series of political and diaspora engagements.
Gachagua left the country on the night of Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
The Democracy for Citizens Party itinerary indicates that the former Deputy President will spend the first 10 days of his US trip resting, re-energising and spending time with his wife before embarking on political activities across several states.
Gachagua had earlier explained that the break was intended to give him an opportunity to focus on his family after an intense period of political activity in Kenya.
“I’m taking a 10-day break to re-energise and spend some quality time with my wife,” Gachagua said.
“I’ve not had an opportunity to spend some quality time with her.”
The boat ride with Dorcas appears to be part of the family-focused period, offering a glimpse into the former Deputy President's activities away from the political arena.
After the 10-day break, Gachagua is scheduled to begin his political and diaspora engagements in Spokane, Washington, from September 4 to September 10.
The Spokane leg has been listed as the first block of political and diaspora activities on the DCP itinerary.
However, DCP indicated that specific venues, hosts and participants for the engagements had not yet been publicly identified.
Gachagua is then expected to travel to Portland, Oregon, where he is scheduled to hold further political and diaspora engagements from September 10 to September 16.
The US tour comes at a critical moment in Gachagua's political journey as he seeks to build momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Before travelling to the US, the former Deputy President concluded an extended political consultation at his Wamunyoro home on August 24.
During the conclusion of the consultations, Gachagua declared that he was ready to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential contest.
The consultations had initially been planned to last 45 days but eventually stretched to 56 days.
They brought together grassroots delegations, church leaders, professionals and politicians from different parts of the country.
