Late Beatrice Njoki Mitaru during a Kirinyaga County Assembly session. /KNAThe United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has mourned Kirinyaga county MCA Beatrice Njoki Mitaru, who died while undergoing treatment at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri.
In a condolence message issued by Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan, the party described Mitaru as a dedicated public servant and an outstanding leader whose service extended beyond Kirinyaga county.
Mitaru, a nominated Member of the County Assembly representing Persons with Disabilities, died at 3 am on August 24, according to a notification issued by the Office of the Speaker of the Kirinyaga County Assembly.
She was first nominated to the County Assembly in 2017 under the Jubilee Party, serving in the Second County Assembly from 2017 to 2022.
She was subsequently nominated under UDA following the 2022 General Election and continued serving in the Third County Assembly.
At the time of her death, Mitaru was the vice chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Finance and Economic Planning.
She also served on the County Assembly Business Committee, Women Caucus, Committee on Gender and Youth, Committee on Environment, Water and Natural Resources, and Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries.
Beyond the county assembly, Mitaru was the leader and chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities Chapter within the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), where she championed the rights, inclusion and welfare of persons with disabilities.
In its condolence message, UDA said Mitaru's leadership and advocacy had made a meaningful contribution to public service and the disability community.
“Kenya has lost a committed patriot, a courageous legislator, and a humble leader whose service was guided by integrity, compassion, and a strong sense of duty,” Hassan said in the message.
The party conveyed its condolences to Mitaru's family, loved ones, colleagues and the people of Kirinyaga.
Her death has also drawn condolences from Kirinyaga leaders.
County Governor Anne Waiguru described her as a dedicated public servant who devoted many years to serving the people and a strong advocate for inclusion and the rights of persons with disabilities.
Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango described Mitaru as a kind-hearted person and a good leader whose public service was marked by humility, dedication and commitment.
Kirinyaga County Assembly Speaker Muteti Murimi also described Mitaru as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to duty contributed significantly to the work of the assembly and the community.
Mitaru was among the Mount Kenya University Class of 2026 graduates, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration and Governance.
