Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the government will accelerate security sector reforms to improve service delivery to the public.
Murkomen said the reforms will focus on strengthening training, modernising infrastructure, improving inter-agency cooperation and enhancing the welfare of security officers.
“As a ministry, we will continue to strengthen training, modernise our infrastructure, improve inter-agency cooperation and the welfare of our officers,” Murkomen said.
He spoke when he joined Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at the Prisons Staff Training College (PSTC) in Ruiru, where Kindiki presided over the pass-out parade of Kenya Prisons Service cadets.
A total of 36 cadet officers from different professional backgrounds, including the medical field, graduated after completing 13 months of rigorous training in various parts of the country.
The ceremony also marked the commissioning of the Wanini Kireri Magereza Hospital, a 150-bed facility offering outpatient and inpatient services.
During the event, 41 vehicles were also flagged off for deployment to various correctional facilities.
Murkomen said the reforms were aimed at transforming the Kenya Prisons Service into a modern correctional institution capable of responding to the changing security environment.
“We are reforming the Kenya Prisons Service into a modern correctional institution anchored on secure custody, rehabilitation, technology, skills development and successful reintegration in tune with the changing security environment,” he said.
