Family opens up on struggles facing KCB executive before death
The family of senior KCB Bank Group employee Rosemary Chemutai Koech has revealed that she had been experiencing marital and financial difficulties before her death at her Ngong home in Kajiado county.
Koech, 40, was found dead at her residence in the Ole Nairi area of Ngong on August 21, 2026.
An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor at Lee Funeral Home established that she died by suicide.
Detectives and family members attended the examination.
“Her family further said she had complained of frustrations linked to debts she was servicing.
Police said Koech, who was the Head of Data Protection at KCB Bank Group, was found hanging from a bedroom window at her home in Kaiyet Close.
A caretaker said relatives broke down the bedroom door after Koech failed to respond to calls and knocks.
Police processed the scene and said no suicide note was recovered. Her body was later moved to Lee Funeral Home for a postmortem examination.
Koech had built a distinguished career in law, technology, public policy and data protection.
She joined KCB in June 2022 as Data Protection Officer after serving as Public Policy Manager at Safaricom. In June 2023, she was promoted to Head of Data Protection, overseeing the Group's data protection compliance.
Before joining Safaricom, she held legal, regulatory and public policy roles in Kenya's technology sector.
The Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) was among organisations that mourned her, describing her as an important figure in the advancement of technology policy, internet governance and digital rights in the region.
She had also served as a KICTANet board member, Principal of the Kenya School of Internet Governance and chaired multistakeholder advisory groups for the Kenya and East Africa Internet Governance Forums.
Her death has left her family, colleagues and Kenya's digital rights community mourning the loss of a prominent data protection and technology policy expert.
