Detectives in Teso South, Busia County, have arrested two men during an operation targeting suspected criminal networks and recovered 180 National Identification Cards bearing different names.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects were apprehended during the operation, after which detectives searched one of the suspects’ residences in the presence of his family.
The search led to the recovery of the 180 identification cards, prompting investigators to establish how the documents came into the suspect’s possession.
The DCI said detectives are also examining whether the cards were being used, or were intended for use, in criminal activities.
Other items recovered during the search included a tear gas canister, a heavy metal rod and eight metal bars. The DCI said the metal bars are believed to be items that could be used for house-breaking.
Detectives also recovered two pairs of military boots and five mobile phones, among other items described by the DCI as exhibits.
The agency said all the recovered items had been secured as exhibits as investigations continued.
The two suspects remained in custody as detectives processed the case ahead of their arraignment.
The DCI said the operation was still ongoing, with investigators pursuing additional leads.
Detectives are also working to establish the wider circumstances surrounding the recovered identification cards and other items.
The investigation will also seek to identify any other individuals who may be linked to the suspected criminal network, the DCI said.
