Four years into President William Ruto’s presidency, informal employment remains the dominant source of work in Kenya. The Kenya Kwanza administration, which pledged to create up to 1.5 million jobs annually, says many labour market entrants find work through informal businesses, casual employment, self-employment and low-productivity activities. It attributes the growth to sustainable enterprises supported by initiatives including the Hustler Fund, NYOTA Programme and digital employment programmes.
