Kamogelo Matona, widely known to her global fanbase as Kamo Mphela, has redefined the path to African superstardom. She is frequently referred to as the "Queen of Amapiano."
Her journey to the top of the charts did not begin in a traditional recording studio. Instead, she rose to fame by posting viral dance videos on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Born in 1999 in South Africa, Mphela first gained local recognition for her skill in various dance styles. These included performances of dynamic pantsula, gqom, and amapiano. She eventually made a successful transition from backup and lead dancer to independent recording artist in her own right.
From Viral Dancer to Global Star
Mphela's musical career officially took off with the release of her debut EP, Twentee, in 2020. She followed this success with a second project, Nkulunkulu, in 2021. Her discography features massive hits that have dominated streaming platforms across the continent. Her single "Dalie" earned multiple music video and streaming awards.
The Nairobi Connection
Mphela will join Congolese icon Fally Ipupa for a highly anticipated concert on 5 September 2026. Ipupa, often called the "Prince of Rhumba", is one of the most influential musicians of his generation. He has a long history of successful solo albums and international collaborations.
Ipupa’s debut solo album, Droit Chemin, set a high bar for African artists early in his career.
The album became a major success, reportedly selling more than 100,000 copies within its first month and earning gold certification.
The event at Uhuru Gardens will showcase a variety of musical styles, from Congolese rhumba to South African Amapiano. This mix reflects the evolving nature of African music. It brings together legends like Ipupa with modern stars like Mphela.
The concert features an extensive schedule of performances. Fally Ipupa is allocated a massive set of 2 hours and 40 minutes. The Kenyan boy band Kodong Klan will also take the stage for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Other major acts joining the bill include DJ Maphorisa and Tango Supreme, also known as Nomfundo Khumalo. Local talent will be represented by media personalities including Azeezah and Nick Odhiambo, together with DJ Joe Mfalme and DJ Ice.The show is supported by several partners, including Villa Rosa Kempinski and Hams Prod.
