Three people were shot dead after police officers opened fire when a mob reportedly tried to rescue a suspect in custody in Mogoto village, Sagamian Location, Narok Amalo Sub-County, police said.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2026, after a team of police officers, accompanied by the area chief, went to the village following reports of a murder.
Upon arrival, the officers found villagers had cornered a suspect believed to be linked to the murder and were subjecting him to mob justice.
The officers intervened and managed to take the suspect into custody as they attempted to leave the scene.
However, the crowd reportedly turned on the police team and began pelting the officers with stones, witnesses and police said.
Police said the officers fired several shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd and secure the suspect, but the warning shots failed to deter the mob.
Police said some bullets struck people in the crowd, leaving three dead and two others injured.
The confrontation forced the police team to scramble for safety and make a tactical withdrawal from the village.
During the incident, one officer lost a magazine belonging to a Jericho pistol, which police said was loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The officer also sustained injuries to both hands and his legs after being struck by stones. He was treated and later discharged in fair condition.
Another officer was hit by a stone on his left eye. His condition was reported as fair.
Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntuntu visited the scene and condemned the tragedy.
He cautioned residents against attempts to remove any suspect from lawful custody.
“This is a crime for the public to try to rescue arrested people. Unfortunately, we have lost three people. We advise against such incidents,” he said.
The bodies of the victims were moved to the mortuary while the injured were recovering in hospitals, police said.
Meanwhile, a police officer escorting a train carrying petroleum products was injured after an unknown person threw a stone at the locomotive as it approached Maili Saba in Nairobi.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2026.
The police officer was escorting a petroleum oil consignment from Nairobi Railways Station to Thika aboard a train consisting of an engine and 11 locomotives.
After reaching Thika, the train began its return journey to Nairobi.
Police said that when the train reached Maili Saba, near Mwiki Railway Station, an unknown person threw a stone at the left side of the engine.
The stone struck the officer on the left side of his head, causing injuries. It also damaged the left side of the locomotive’s windscreen.
The train crew managed to proceed to the station, where the injured officer was rushed to Nairobi West Hospital for further medical attention.
Police have launched investigations to establish the identity of the person who threw the stone and the circumstances surrounding the incident involving the train.
