Mercy Nashipai Legilisho, popularly known as Mercy Masai, has joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as she prepares to contest the Kajiado Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua welcomed Masai to the party in a post on Monday, describing her move as a decision to listen to the people of Kajiado and join what he called their party of choice.
“Welcome to DCP Party Mercy Nashipai Legilisho (Mercy Masai) as you plan your bid for the position of Woman Representative for Kajiado County,” Gachagua said.
He said Masai had made the right decision by joining DCP, adding that the party would carry the aspirations of Kenyans.
“The future is Green!” Gachagua said.
Masai becomes the latest political figure to associate with DCP as Gachagua steps up efforts to expand the party beyond its Mount Kenya base ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party has in recent months attracted a number of elected leaders and politicians, including Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and East African Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega.
On July 29, Gachagua also announced that 24 sitting MCAs from Laikipia and Nakuru counties had joined DCP, with the leaders expected to seek various elective positions under the party in 2027.
On August 10, Gachagua received 10 Kajiado MCAs and an aspirant into the party as he intensifies his grassroots mobilisation drive ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The entrants included elected MCAs from UDA and ODM, as well as a ward representative aspirant, in a move that Gachagua said demonstrated growing support for the party in Kajiado County.
“The journey to 100 per cent DCP in Kajiado is almost complete,” Gachagua said.
He said the decision by the MCAs to join the party was an indication that the DCP was gaining ground in the county, adding that the latest entrants were themselves part of the grassroots support base.
“I never asked the MCAs to listen to the ground; they are the ground themselves,” he said.
The entrants were Isaac Kiresian, Minority Leader of the Kajiado County Assembly and MCA for Magadi Ward; Joseph Torris of Ewuaso Oonkidongi Ward; Edward Lemomo of Kuku Ward; Caroline Ndeti, a nominated MCA representing Kaputei North Ward; Titus Matheka of Ongata Rongai Ward; John Maina Mutiga of Nkaimurunya Ward; Nais Naisiae Karia, a nominated MCA; Marush Kisemei of Oloosirkon Sholinko Ward; and Mbiriri Mwaura of Ngong Ward.
Peter Tirishe, a Mosiro Ward aspirant, also joined the party.
Gachagua said the leaders had informed him that their supporters wanted them to join a political formation that they believed would listen to their concerns.
The recruitment drive comes after Gachagua formally unveiled DCP as his political vehicle, with the party adopting the slogan “Skiza Wakenya” and positioning itself as a platform focused on listening to citizens.
Masai's entry gives the party another foothold outside the regions where it has recently recorded increased political activity, as DCP seeks to build a national presence ahead of the next General Election.
