Two people died following a grisly road accident along Riverside Drive in Nairobi after a Range Rover lost control and crashed into a boda boda rider.
The accident occurred opposite Chandarana Supermarket, where the vehicle reportedly struck the motorcycle rider before rolling several times, police and witnesses said of the Monday morning incident.
The boda boda rider and the driver of the Range Rover are said to have died at the scene.
According to preliminary reports, the Range Rover was allegedly speeding and overtaking dangerously when the driver lost control, resulting in the crash.
Other occupants of the vehicle, reportedly foreign nationals, sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the accident were not immediately clear, with police expected to investigate the cause of the crash, including the allegations of speeding and dangerous overtaking.
The incident has renewed concerns over reckless driving and road safety on Nairobi’s busy roads.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
On Sunday night, at least eight people were killed in separate accidents in the country.
Police said the victims included a pedestrian, five riders, a pillion passenger and a driver.
The accidents also left 22 people with serious injuries.
Dozens of people are killed weekly in separate road accidents, leaving many families suffering. Road fatalities have continued to rise despite ongoing enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
Authorities attribute most crashes to reckless overtaking, speeding and drunk driving, while mechanical defects such as worn-out tyres, faulty brakes and poor vehicle maintenance have also been cited as major contributing factors.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic rules, maintain roadworthy vehicles and exercise extra caution, particularly on highways and accident-prone sections of the road network in the country.
