A 30-year-old man died and his wife sustained serious burns after a house caught fire in Jogoo Village, Kitutu Central, Kisii county.
The incident occurred at around midnight, with police receiving a report on Friday.
Police officers visited the scene and established that the timber-built house had been completely destroyed by fire.
The house was occupied by a caretaker couple.
The woman suffered serious burns to her back and legs. She was rushed to Ram Hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition.
Her husband was burned to death, and his body was reportedly beyond recognition.
Members of the public managed to contain the fire, but the house and household property of unknown value were reduced to ashes.
Police processed, photographed and documented the scene before the man’s body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
The cause of the fire had not been established, with police investigations ongoing.
Elsewhere, a 76-year-old man died after a fire broke out at his wooden house in Bypass Village, Kitiri Sub-location, North Kinangop, Nyandarua county.
The incident occurred on Friday, with police officers responding to the scene.
The deceased, identified as Jeremiah Gitau Thethere, was reportedly sleeping alone in the three-roomed wooden house when the fire broke out.
Police said he had been using a lit charcoal jiko inside the house at the time.
Members of the public managed to put out the fire, but the house and its contents were completely destroyed.
The victim was burned beyond recognition.
Police officers processed the scene before the deceased’s body was removed and taken to the Engineer County Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting an autopsy.

Elsewhere, police in Kimilili, Bungoma county, have launched investigations into the murder of a 54-year-old man whose body was found beside the Chebukwabi-Miurui road.
The deceased was identified as Kennedy Muganda, whose body was discovered at about 3am on Friday.
Police responded to the scene and found Muganda lying on his back beside the road.A preliminary examination of the body revealed visible bruises around the neck and blood oozing from the ears.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed and documented the scene before the body was removed and taken to Sante Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.
The motive for the killing remains unknown.Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Muganda’s death and identify those responsible.
