Property of unknown value was destroyed at Homa Bay Tourist Hotel on Saturday evening after a group of youths raided the facility and allegedly looted items.

According to hotel proprietor Otieno Odongo, about 50 youths first arrived at the hotel at around 1.30pm and asked whether members of the Linda Mwananchi movement were inside.

Odongo said the youths left after establishing that the group was not at the hotel.

“They were looking for members of the Linda Mwananchi movement, whom they did not find,” Odongo said.

He said another group, estimated at about 100 youths, returned shortly after 4pm and gained entry into the hotel after chasing away a security guard.

The youths then forced workers and guests to leave before entering rooms, where they allegedly took various items and damaged property.

“The youths chased everybody from the hotel. They went into rooms before looting and damaging property,” Odongo said.

He added that CCTV cameras were damaged and lights in the hotel were switched off during the incident.

Odongo reported the matter at Homa Bay Police Station.

At around 8pm, a group of youths was reportedly seen carrying a crocodile statue believed to have been taken from the hotel.

The statue was later placed on Homa Bay-Rongo Road in Homa Bay town, where groups of youths were also seen attempting to block the road.

The incident came amid heightened political tensions in the town over the Linda Mwananchi movement and the slogan calling for elected leaders to serve only one term.

A senior political leader from the region was recently captured in a video allegedly addressing ODM supporters on the planned Linda Mwanchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday,August 16.

In the video, the leader speaking in dholuo is heard urging supporters to confront members of the movement and warning against those promoting the one-term slogan.

The circumstances surrounding the hotel raid and whether those involved in the incident were linked to the remarks remain subject to police investigations.
