A senior police officer shot and killed an unidentified man who allegedly threatened to attack him with a panga during a night patrol at Masogo Market in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during a routine police patrol, officials said.
The officer encountered the unidentified man armed with a panga and allegedly behaving in a manner that posed an immediate threat to members of the public.
The officer reportedly identified himself as a police officer from a distance and ordered the man to stop, surrender and drop the weapon. The man allegedly became more aggressive and advanced towards the officer.
A private security officer manning a nearby club, Honolulu, attempted to intervene but was allegedly struck on the left hand with the panga and forced to retreat.
The man then allegedly advanced towards the officer while threatening to cut him.
After repeated orders to surrender reportedly failed, the officer drew his Jericho pistol and fired one shot at close range, fatally injuring the man.
Police visited the scene and established the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Crime Scene Investigation officers from Kisumu processed and documented the scene.
The deceased’s body was moved to Ahero Hospital mortuary for preservation pending identification and postmortem examination.
Police are continuing investigations into the incident, including the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
Meanwhile, a woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband at Chepkoghun Trading Centre in Pokot Central Sub-County, West Pokot County.
The deceased, identified as Irene Chesista, was reportedly attacked at about 9pm by her husband, who allegedly fled the scene after the incident.
According to police, children belonging to the suspect were screaming and ran towards Chepkoghun Trading Centre, where they reported that Chesista had been stabbed.
Members of the public and the deceased’s father rushed to the scene and found her with a knife still lodged in the left side of her chest.
She was rushed to Ortum Mission Hospital on a motorcycle for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing, while efforts to trace the suspect are underway.
And a 52-year-old man died after collapsing near a latrine in Malawa Village, Kakuuni Sub-Location, Katulani Sub-County, Kitui County.
The deceased, identified as Mulwa Munyalo, reportedly developed breathing difficulties while being escorted to relieve himself near a latrine.
According to police, Munyalo had visited an agency where he asked a local to accompany him to the latrine.
They had walked to within about two metres of the facility when his condition reportedly worsened and he began breathing heavily.
Members of the public contacted his relatives, who brought medication after it was established that Munyalo had a history of asthma dating back to childhood.
Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police visited the scene, which was processed and documented.
The body was later moved to the Kitui County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.
