Patience Ozokwor, Nollywood actress widely known as Mama G, has opened up about her long association with some of the Nigerian film industry’s most feared characters, including witches, strict mothers-in-law and ruthless antagonists.
For years, Ozokwor has been recognised for bringing intimidating characters to life, with her performances often leaving a lasting impression on audiences. However, the actress says there is a deeper reason behind the type of roles she became famous for.
Speaking during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe on Monday, Ozokwor suggested that her reputation for playing villains was not entirely accidental.
“I think God gave me that niche,” she explained, adding that she approaches such roles with the intention of making them impactful.
The actress noted that she dislikes injustice, conflict and hatred in real life, but when she is handed a negative character, she commits fully to portraying the character's flaws.
Ozokwor explained that her villainous roles are designed to make viewers think about the consequences of their actions.
According to the actress, audiences should be able to watch a character's journey and understand what can happen when someone chooses to live a destructive or harmful life.
She said her performances are therefore more than simply portraying a wicked character for entertainment. Instead, she sees them as opportunities to communicate lessons about morality, consequences and the importance of making good choices.
That approach has helped cement Ozokwor's place among Nollywood's most recognisable veteran actors.
She became a household name during the 1990s, with her powerful performances in numerous Nigerian films earning her a reputation for playing characters that could command attention as soon as they appeared on screen.
Her portrayals of wicked mothers-in-law, scheming women and supernatural villains became so memorable that generations of viewers began associating Mama G with the characters she played.
The actress has previously spoken about the difference between her on-screen image and her real-life personality, particularly because her convincing performances sometimes made viewers believe she was just as intimidating away from the cameras.
Her latest comments have once again reminded fans that the feared Mama G character is a product of her acting ability.
