Danish Onyango has been sworn in as Homa Bay County’s new Deputy Governor, six months after the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga.
Magwanga resigned on February 26 this year, citing frustrations from his boss, Governor Gladys Wanga.
Onyango could not be sworn in immediately after the Homa Bay County Assembly vetted and approved his appointment following a court case challenging the appointments over alleged non-compliance with the two-thirds gender rule in Governor Wanga’s executive.

The petitioners also claimed that Onyango was serving as the county executive member for Roads. The case was later dismissed.
On Thursday, Onyango was sworn in alongside Obiny Dede and Isaac Ongiri, who were elevated to serve as executive members for Trade and Governance, respectively.
Dede and Ongiri had previously served as chief officers.
The three officials were sworn in before High Court Judge Patrick Otieno.

He also pledged loyalty to Governor Wanga and promised to support her administration’s development agenda.
“I assure the people of Homa Bay that I will collaborate and be obedient to Governor Wanga for us to achieve the development agenda of the county. People elect leaders to transform their lives,” Onyango said.

“This is a great honour. I will use this opportunity to serve the people diligently,” Ongiri said.
Governor Wanga, who graced the ceremony, urged the new officials to focus on service delivery.
She said residents were looking up to them to improve their living standards through the dockets they would oversee.
“This ceremony suffered impediments before, but now the swearing-in has taken place. Let us focus on service delivery to the people,” Wanga said.
She said her administration remained committed to implementing development projects aimed at improving the lives of residents.
“We have done over 600 ECDE classrooms, done water projects, roads and other projects to improve the lives of residents. Let us not tire from implementing projects that transform lives in our county,” the governor said.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma urged the new county officials to support Wanga’s development agenda.
He said working harmoniously would help the governor achieve her development programmes.
“We had a deputy governor who was pulling in a different direction from his governor. Let us be supportive to the county government,” Kaluma said.
