Wiper members have rallied behind party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to be fielded as the presidential candidate for the united opposition in the next election.
The members said Kalonzo was the most experienced among opposition leaders to lead the country, citing his role as former Vice President under former President Mwai Kibaki.
Wiper coordinator for Nakuru Moses Mulu said the party was positioning itself as a national outfit and would field candidates across the country.
“We want to assure all aspirants that we will field candidates across the whole of Kenya," Mulu said in Nanyuki town.
"We know Kalonzo will contest to become Kenya’s sixth President. We will also have candidates for governors, MPs and MCAs.”
Mulu said the party’s recent changes to its leadership structure demonstrated its national character, pointing to the appointment of leaders from different parts of the country to key positions.
He urged politicians seeking elective seats to join Wiper, saying the party leader had assured aspirants of free and fair nominations ahead of the 2027 polls.
The members also urged opposition parties to agree on their presidential candidate early enough to allow them adequate time to campaign.
They said Kalonzo had the experience required to lead the opposition into the 2027 elections and urged other opposition leaders to put aside individual ambitions and work towards a united front against President William Ruto.
The remarks came as Wiper has stepped up its preparations for the 2027 elections, with Kalonzo launching his presidential campaign platform in June and maintaining the opposition remains focused on challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The party has also continued to push for unity within the opposition, even as competition intensifies over who will emerge as the coalition’s presidential flagbearer.
In July, Wiper reaffirmed its commitment to the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition, while Kalonzo accused the government of using state resources and institutions to weaken the opposition.
Wiper has also sought to expand its national appeal, with its official platform presenting the party as an advocate of inclusive governance, equitable distribution of resources, accountability and free and fair elections.
In Laikipia, the party’s candidates said a Wiper-led government would prioritise the security of farmers and livestock keepers, particularly amid concerns over livestock theft in the county.
Laikipia parliamentary aspirant Nick Gatumbi said residents needed a government that would take the security of their livestock seriously and ensure stolen animals could be traced.
“We want a government that is serious about taking care of its people and ensuring every animal from Laikipia is not stolen and, if stolen, can be traced,” he said.
Gatumbi said he was confident residents would support his bid as well as Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions, adding that Wiper members in the county were ready to mobilise support for the party ahead of the elections.
“I am hopeful the people of Laikipia will vote for me and also vote for Kalonzo,” he said.
