Detectives are investigating an incident where a bouncer was fatally shot over claims he was a mobile phone snatcher in Githurai, Nairobi.
The police claimed the shooting happened on August 9 during a pursuit after a group of four young men allegedly robbed a passenger in a moving vehicle along a highway in the area.
The incident was reported at Githurai 44 Police Post at about 10:20 pm on Sunday, August 9, 2026, police said.
The family of the deceased man, Eric Muiruri, who was a bouncer at a local club, has disputed the police claims.
They said he was framed after he fought with a manager at a club.
According to police, witnesses saw the four men snatch a phone from a moving vehicle before members of the public challenged them to stop.
The suspects reportedly fled in different
directions, prompting a pursuit.
One of the suspects was fatally injured during
the chase, police said.
A knife and three mobile phones were recovered from the deceased. One of the phones was identified as an Itel, while the makes of the other two had not been established, police said then.
Members of the public identified the deceased as Eric Muiruri, who was well known as a bouncer at a local establishment.
His body, which was muddy then, according to witnesses, was moved to the City Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.
The family of the deceased and a group of human rights activists visited the mortuary on Tuesday and demanded justice into the shooting.
They denied claims Muiruri was a thief and argued he was branded so after the fatal shooting.
“They even brought things they claimed were recovered from him after he had died. We demand justice,” a family member said.
The family said they have been frustrated in their efforts to record the incident at the local police station.
Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said they are investigating the incident.
He said a team will participate in a planned autopsy exercise as another one talks to witnesses as part of the probe.
Hussein Khalid, Executive Director, Vocal Africa, said they are pursuing the matter for justice. "It's very clear that this problem of police killings, extra-judicial killings is with the heads of police and security services in this country, because they're not doing anything.”
And a 29-year-old man was stabbed to death along Musa Gitau Road in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, in the early hours of Monday.
The deceased, identified as Anthony Mugumo Ndungu, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by a man known in the area.
The deceased was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police rushed to the scene and found the suspect
being subjected to mob justice.
Police intervened and rescued Wangari before
arresting him.
A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered at the scene and preserved as an exhibit.
The suspect was escorted to Karai Police
Station, where he was booked pending further investigations into the killing.
