Opposition leaders pose for a photo after a meeting in Nairobi on August 11, 2026/XA section of opposition leaders met on Tuesday as they stepped up efforts to forge a united political front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the alliance intends to field a single presidential candidate against President William Ruto.
In a statement after the meeting, Gachagua said leaders under the United Alternative Government banner reaffirmed their commitment to settle on one candidate through an agreed formula.
He said the leaders were committed to presenting Kenyans with a single presidential candidate, saying unity would be critical to their efforts to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“One year to the 2027 General Election, we met this afternoon and renewed our commitment that no matter what, we shall have one single presidential candidate...,” he said.
Gachagua thanked PLP leader Martha Karua for bringing the leaders together, describing her as “the mother of our liberation.”
Opposition leaders pose for a photo after a meeting in Nairobi on August 11, 2026/XHe also thanked former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, former Agriculture CS Peter Munya, Lenny Kivuti, former Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa and Mohammed Ali, who represented Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The meeting comes as opposition parties and political leaders continue consultations ahead of the 2027 polls, with whether they will agree on a joint presidential candidate widely seen as a key test of their unity.
